Day_34 (rev): The meanings of the Typhoon Makurazaki in 1945

After the second world war, Japan was vulnerable, so we had a lot of natural disasters, especially Typhoon disasters from 1945 to 1959. Some call this 15 years a great flood and storm era(see the below figure). The first hit was Typhoon Makurazaki in Sep. 1945*.The typhoon disrupted Hiroshima city. There were 1229 casualties in the city. This fact reminds us of what happened in Hiroshima in the same year. The atomic bomb destroyed Hiroshima city on August, one month before the typhoon. During the war, we had no weather forecast system because of the military’s reasons. The people in Hiroshima were living in vulnerable houses because they were hardly hit by the bomb. They did not have enough info. about the Typhoon’s coming also**. Therefore, this typhoon disaster is a complex disaster which consists of natural disasters and human-made disasters aspects***.

[Japanese]

Day_35 : Technological Disasters

Concerning the technological disasters in Japan, we had a lot of pollution issues after the Second World War. We had been seeking economic development first and tended to neglect the side effects. There are four major issues, Minamata disease, Niigata Minamata disease, Yokkaichi asthma, and Itai-itai disease. The issues had been uncovered, especially from the late 1950s to 1960s.

The followings are the youtube videos from TVE we can see the situations.

Day_32: Disaster Chronology and Typhoon Isewan (Typhoon Vera)

A disaster chronology will be shown in this blog. The chronology can be said basic research for social science.  The environmental sociology in Japan was polished by the chronology. Our research laboratory was very famous in this field. The NIED (National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention) has created a short disaster chronology and conducted some memorial events. The Typhoon Isewan (1959) related event was held in 2009. The following site is the information about the event. Sorry, this is only in Japanese, however, so many precious pictures and movies are uploaded, so you can easily check the contents. A Japanese disaster history after the Second World War including the Typhoon Isewan disaster is explained below:
